How to use Notion effectively

In order to truly take advantage of Notion, you must approach it like an "archive" of your life — or what I call my Second Brain.

For me, Notion has two main functions:

  1. To run my freelance business (projects, repeat tasks like invoicing, and long-term strategic planning)

  2. To plan my future

I'll focus on the latter for this explanation.

When I say "plan my future" I mean specifically:

  • the kind of work I want to do

  • journal entries to reflect on

  • travel plans

  • and recently, a relationship database

A lot of what my databases end up being are just timestamps. Journal entries for how I'm doing in List View. Daily & Weekly planners (with templates for each) in Gallery View. Note databases for my novel.

My goal is to capture all the ideas that pop up in my head throughout the day in the appropriate place. Notion helps me do that in whatever way my ADHD brain wants.

And I think that's my biggest point: I didn't start using Notion seriously until I realized how much stuff I was seriously forgetting. I hated that thought, and knew I needed to put everything in one place. (Even if that place just links out to a bunch of OTHER places on the web.)
